[ARCHIVED] Hillside Parking Boxes

The devastating 1991 Oakland-Berkeley Hill firestorm taught us numerous lessons. One was that cars parked improperly on narrow, winding hillside streets can not only delay access for emergency vehicles, it impedes essential resident evacuation routes. Until then, many of our streets in the hillside areas were at times, simply not accessible to fire vehicles due to parked cars. After this terrible tragedy, many fire agencies invoked new, restrictive parking policies so that cars can only park on the street if a fire vehicle can pass by. Thus, the parking boxes are those areas on the streets where you can properly park, thus allowing emergency vehicles to pass by. It doesn't have to be a major wildfire for us to need access. Fire engines along with an ambulance respond to all 9-1-1- medical requests. These happen many times every day. House fires also happen all times of the year. So please don't think that it's okay to park blocking the street on a rainy day. We need unobstructed access 24/7/365. Someone's life, maybe your own, depends on it.
