First, if you have a green can, you may place the tree at curb side on your normal weekly garbage and recycling pick up day. If the tree is taller than 5 feet, cut it in two so it will fit into the garbage/recycling truck. Also, remove the stand and any lights, ornaments or tinsel.
Or, take the tree to either the Piper Park parking lot or to the drop off site adjacent to Niven Park across from the Greenbrae Fire Station. Again, remove the stand and any decorations. But, the tree does not need to be cut into pieces if you choose this option.
You may use either option beginning Christmas Day through January 2012. Remember, the longer the tree stays in the house, the dryer and more combustible it becomes. Christmas trees are the cause of devastating home fires every year. So, be very careful where you place the tree in your home (away from any heat producing source) and make sure it's in a stand that contains water.
